Bloom

This ~560 sq ft-mural was designed and produced for The Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children (NWSDHH) in partnership with Urban Artworks.

The hands on the top left side spell the word “be” in American Sign Language (ASL). The hands on the bottom sign the word “bloom” in ASL. The design includes De'VIA (Deaf Art) motifs like nature, streams, trees, a butterfly, a native Washington State flower (Mimulus Guttatus or yellow monkeyflower), mountains, and a bird's nest—all elements that are affirmative and empowering symbols of Deaf culture.

I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity to work with Urban Artworks staff and NWSDHH staff and students to make their vision come to life and help make their newly renovated school building a vibrant and welcoming place where they are proud to be.

The NWSDHH project was incredibly memorable as a Teaching Artist and Muralist and one that hits close to home. This experience made me realize how important accessibility and advocacy are for everyone, especially for young people. Read more about this project in my Q&A with Urban Artworks here.

Project Overview

“Aistė was an absolute joy to work with! We love our mural design and how thoughtfully and vibrantly it brings our mission, student community, and school values to life! Aistė worked so well with our team in creating and refining the design. When it came time to paint, she showed up each day with wonderful energy and a spirit of welcome for our curious and excited students and staff. She worked beautifully with each of our students, bringing a lovely understanding of how to open up communication with them. We will cherish our mural for years to come!”
